Is Chanel and Coach Really Worth The Hefty Price Tag?

chanel_no5_edpWelcome to another installment of our weekly feature: Ask the Chick.
The chick is Latia Harris, a noodad reader and mom with a lot of
answers for you. Each week, Latia will answer the questions you don’t
have the balls to ask your own wives.

Dear Chick,

My wife and I have been married for 12 years and we have gotten in the habit of just telling each other what we want for our birthdays. Anyways, this year she told me she wants this $800 Coach bag and this $100 bottle of Chanel No. 5 perfume. My question for you, is is this stuff really worth the price because I may have to refinance my house!

Dear Dude,

Yes, this stuff is really worth the price. We are women-shiny labels and expensive perfumes make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I assume she’s asking for such expensive gifts because she knows that the two of you are in a financial position to afford such extravagant gifts…so why not let the lady have her birthday wish and get them for her.

If you aren’t in a position to give her both of the gifts, give her one or the other.

If you aren’t in a position to give her either of the gifts, have a powwow and explain to her the situation. She could be under the impression that the two of you are in a better financial position than you really are.

And check these sites to see if you can get the same Coach bag and/or Chanel No. 5 perfume at a discounted price:

Good Luck, The Chick

For anyone who feels they\'re financially secure enough to spend $800 on a bag, please first reassure me that you\'ve a) maxed out your 401k and IRA contributions for \'06, b) contributed healthily to your kids 529s and c) paid off any credit card debt. That done, $800 for a freakin\' bag!? She says she wants it but can she not be happy with something that costs less? I\'m not shocked by the price or by your wife\'s request...it\'s just that I know I\'m in the company of guys (mainly) and I can say that!null

I agree with SIL about keeping financial responsibility priorities in check when it comes to spending, but I think it\'s okay to buy things like this once in a while if you can swing it. It sounds like your wife just simply told you what she would like for her birthday when you asked her.

Sure, your wife could carry her crap in a different, less expensive bag, or wear a Chanel knock-off perfume from CVS instead of the real thing. And guys could also smoke White Owl cigars and drink Natural Light beer while they play poker \'just for the fun of it\' with their buddies. Or perhaps guys could use second-hand clubs from Play It Again Sports when they tee-off at the town-operated 9-hole golf course with the cork tees and above-ground irrigation system running alongside the \"fairways\". As evolved as we men are, there will always be things that we don\'t understand about women and they\'ll never understand about us.

If you can afford it and it will make her happy on her birthday, the bag and perfume are worth it.

You can\'t just say that you better have maxed out this and that before you buy a bag. The needs of the present need to be balanced with the needs of the future. Are you responsible with your money? Are you planning and executing steps for the future? Is it OK to splurge right now? If the answer is yes, go ahead.

It\'s not all about financial priorities. This is one of those gifts that gets used everyday. And everyday she uses it, she\'s going to remember how wonderful you are. And, everyday she remembers how wonderful you are is another day where you might just get some. Don\'t get her that bag? Well, there\'s sometimes a different kind of hell to pay, which is far more expensive than a few Benjamins (not that I\'d know anything about that).

Ah Hah! Women\'s handbags! Well well (crackin the fingers and stretching) it just so happens that I was the Women\'s Handbag buyer for Macy\'s, and let me tell you guys, as a straight and single guy (I have no kids, but I know the Dads so I peruse the website to show my support) I can tell you women love handbags more then they let on. Its almost a physical reaction, and nothing elicits a more pronounced excitement than a brand label. Its status. The real question here then is \"what price happiness?\" Is a Coach bag worth $800.00? No, it is not. The leather, the workmanship, the detailing can all be found in equal measure with lesser priced bags. But these aren\'t the only cost associated with it. The look on her face, the excitement in her eyes, the happiness she will get repeatedly whenever she wears it, those things make the bag worth it. Plus on a practical side, it will last for a very very long time, and you can get her the matching Coach wallet next year, still make her happy, and only spend $140.00. She\'ll thank you every time another woman in her office says \"nice bag!\" and that, as Todd says, is just another way to rack up those points. You only live once. Unless your James Bond, in which case you would have long since bought the bag for her BEFORE she told you because you happened to see her glance at it in the window of the store, linger over it for a minute, and you committed it to memory. THATS James Bond!
