10 Best Household Items to Distract Your Kid During Diaper Changes

Posted on 02 06, 2008 under Doodads, The Manual by Noodad | Comments

whisk.jpgThere is a lovely time in your young kid’s life where diaper changes become a throwdown. This typically occurs between the ages of 8 - 14 months and during this time, every time you lay your kid down for the diaper change, they squirm, roll, kick, and fight their way free.

I have a family of squirmers. My daughter (now 5) when she was in this stage, would contort her body in a twisted shape. My son (now almost 3) was a kicker. He would not let you hold his ankles and would frequently end up stepping in his own poodad. Now, my wife and I are on our third. This little guy (10 months) is a roller and a kicker. It is almost as if he channeled the powers of his older siblings and formed a super contorter. He will kick you in the forearms with one leg, while prying your grip off his body with the other leg. He will then roll away before you can get a firm grip to stabilize him.

This is clearly a problem. These are extreme times, my friends. Times where ordinary toys do not give you enough time to make a pit stop. You need to constantly change the game if you expect to stay one up on your opponent. Here are 10 household items that have worked to distract my kids enough to get a diaper change in. Hopefully, they can help you. Read the rest of this entry »

Will Your Valentine’s Day Be Naughty or Nice?

Posted on 01 29, 2008 under Doodads, Her by reviewdad | Comments

NSA (Noodad Service Announcement): Valentine’s Day is less than 3 weeks away. Don’t let it sneak up on you…do your shopping now.

And if your a busy guy who’d prefer to let your fingers do the shopping (I’m not talking about the 5 finger discount!), Red Envelope can help.

A ReviewDad favorite for many years now for its vast selection of “I’d NEVER have thought of that” gifts, stellar web site, great customer service (with honest-to-god helpful live chat) and somewhat reasonable prices, not only can Red Envelope help but it stands to become the chief weapon in your gift-giving arsenal from this day forward.

V-day is tough…I mean, do you want to be THAT guy who does the dozen roses thing EVERY year? You don’t and she doesn’t want you to be either. Other options include what? Undies and chocolate. BORING. Let’s face it, she doesn’t want to wear it and the chocolate isn’t much of an incentive! And none of these represent much in the way of upside for you.

Subway: A Healthier Option for Kids…Also a Dangerous One

Posted on 01 20, 2008 under Current Events, Doodads by Noodad | Comments

subway_freshfit_logo.pngOn a Saturday filled with errands, my wife and I decided to stop for lunch at Subway with the kids. From a marketing perspective, Subway has done a pretty good job differentiating themselves from the generic sandwich shop market by being the healthier option. “Eat Fresh” certainly keeps Subway above the “Mmmm…Toasty” and “Funny name, great sandwiches” that Quiznos and Schlotzsky’s provides.

We bought our daughter a turkey and cheese sandwich with apple wedges and an apple juice. That’s no comparison to the 5 piece chicken McNugget Happy Meal with french fries and a Hi-C orange drink.

My son got a salami sandwich with no cheese (milk allergy) and even though the meat was greasier than his sister’s turkey, compared to a hamburger, we were feeling pretty decent about our healthier choice for them. Read the rest of this entry »

“My First Spider-Man” Will Mess You Up

spider-man200.jpgMeet “My First Spider-Man”, Playskool’s gateway super hero action figure for the toddler set.  Press the black spider in the center of his torso, and Spider-Man’s eyes light up as he enthusiastically shouts different messages such as: “Ready to be a super hero!”,  “Target practice time!”, and, of course, “I’m your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!”  He’s got an oversized head, hands, and feet for easy handling by your toddler.  Perhaps the coolest selling point is the web blaster feature.  Two white plastic webs slide into holes in Spidey’s wrists, and there’s a button on his back that launches them when pressed.  The danger in this toy isn’t from the force at which the webs launch (they pack about as much a punch as Ron Jeremy after take six), but rather from where the webs are left around the house once your kid has completed a round of crime-fighting with Spider-Man. The Top 10 Poop-Related Kids Products of All Time

Posted on 01 16, 2008 under Doodads by Noodad | Comments

pee_and_poo_plush_dolls.jpgOne of the best parts about being a dad of potty-training aged kids is the permission to be yourself. See, your wife probably read in some parenting magazine that the key to a successful potty training is to embrace the topic of taking a dump and to talk about it with your kids without any type of shame. To me, I take that as permission to revert to that special place in every guy’s heart called potty humor.

So, if you have to talk about it without shame but with pride, you may as well have fun with it. And that is why I am pleased to bring you the top 10 Poop-related kids products of all time. Any of these could be acceptable in your household (all in the name of potty training of course) and you will make you ROFLMMFAO. Read the rest of this entry »

Pampers Wipes: A Conspiracy Theory

Posted on 01 13, 2008 under Doodads by Noodad | Comments

babywipes.jpgAt first I thought I was crazy. I thought that I was over-analyzing something that I shouldn’t really be concerned with. But this issue really bugs me. I am convinced that Pampers have changed the way they manufacture their wipes because every time you pull a wipe out now, 3 of them come out of the box.

This did not use to happen. This development occurred during the last few months. Typically, you could pull one wipe out at a time. Now, you are pulling out a moist trail of wipes every time. I am convinced this increased “stickiness” is an attempt to have people go through their wipes supply quicker thus selling more wipes but the again, I am a conspiracy theorist.

After using the same wipes for over 5 years now, the slightest change can be noticed. I was able to find a forum thread that covers this same topic of Pampers Conspiracy so I know that I am not alone. Has anyone else discovered this?

Here is a pretty funny Potty Tiger toy sold in Japan to give your little kid some words of encouragement as they learn to pinch their loaves by themselves.

Wait for the pinching in action at the end of the video. Read the rest of this entry »

Moola Saver: Use Avent Nipples on Born Free Bottles

Posted on 12 27, 2007 under Doodads, The Manual by reviewdad | Comments

keglot-1a.jpgIn a post last month, I discussed our switch from Avent bottles and sippy cups to BPA-free versions by Born Free. The whole transition was a big expense but for reasons addressed in that post, one we felt was the right thing to do. It turns out that there’s a way to save some coin if you’re buying Born Free out of the gate OR if your transitioning like we did - use Avent nipples. Avent nipples fit the Born Free bottle tops that are universal to the bottles and sippy cup rigs.

We discovered this after I neglected to pick up a baggie that contained ALL of our Born Free nipples from child care the day before a two-week holiday break. Standing at the kitchen counter feeling my wife’s eyes bore into the back of my head for being boneheaded, I thought “hmmm…I wonder…” Sure ’nuff, to my delight and our relief, they fit.

Avent nipples run $3.50-$4.25 for 2. Born Free run $4.75-$6. Not a ton of cash saved but it’s the principle, right?!

Planet Heroes Rule. Gowns and Crowns Don’t.

turboshuttle.pngHaving 3 kids and a former toy designer for a wife means a ton of toys in our house. And nothing beats the onslaught of toys that enter our household on Christmas day.

But when you bring in a bunch of toys there are sure to be huge hits and enormous failures. This year my wife and I….errr Santa….got my 2 year old son a pretty sweet toy. We also got a somewhat disappointing toy for my 5 year old daughter. Here’s my story. Read the rest of this entry »
