Idiot Parents Put Three Year Old in Situation to Shoot Six Year Old

Let me just start by saying that I am not some hippy, tree hugging, make-love-not-war guy. I understand why someone would want to own a weapon.  The second amendment to the Constitution of the United States ensures us all the right to bear arms. And whether you are of the belief that "guns kill people" or "people kill people" the fact that even one person owns a gun ensures that someone else is going to want to own a  bigger gun in order to keep the other in check.

I read the news. I see what guns do

I have never felt compelled to own a weapon of my own.

I'm also not a Birkenstock-wearer and I cherish my rights as an American, but still, the time has long since passed that there's any legitimate need for citizens to own handguns. We can still fully 'enjoy' the right afforded us by the 2nd Amendment with rifles and there's so much, much less a chance for senseless shooting accidents & deaths.

Handguns need to be reserved for military personnel, law-enforcement, and other civic officials. In much the same way as (I imagine - and please tell me that I'm not wrong about this) citizens cannot legally purchase and use a bazooka, we should also not be allowed to buy handguns or the ammunition with which to use them.

rob, birkenstock wearer? :P i've got a pair, and they're comfy, and look waaaaaay better than crocs. there's birkenstock sneakers too... :)

the need of handguns for protection may have passed...in many places, but in others, it hasn't. there's always the need of protection, some people are just violent, and some people are just targets. the problem with handguns, is lack of training, and idiots that don't lock their guns in a way that keeps the kids out of the guncase, and allows the adult to take the gun out to use it, not the guns themselves. of course, people not having decent lockup strategies is the prime reason people shouldn't have guns, because their kids can get at them...and leaving them loaded, oi!
how about, of the many people that have handguns, what percentage are trained? i'd be willing to guess it's in the low single digits, specially in the states. banning handguns is not the answer, making sure people that own them don't do stupid things, and are held responsible if there's an accident related to unauthorised use, seems to be. now it's 'aaaawww, his son died cause he was playing with a handgun, that's enough punishment' really? i think not, leaving a gun where a child can play with it, is reckless, and needs some kind of punishment for doing something so stupid.
i don't feel the need to own a gun, i feel pretty secure that i won't need it, and i don't feel the need to have a gun bigger than my neighbour, a 50calibre versus a 22calibre, they'll both stop an assailant, however, will the person breaking into my place have a gun?
it's not just a clean cut issue, saying that handguns should be banned, doesn't take into account the fact that criminals have them, and will continue to get them, and are cowards in the face of a homeowner with one. you likely don't even have to fire a shot.

my total opinion is that people without handgun use training, regular retraining, and effective, safe gun storage, should not have them, a middle of the road opinion.

that's also the difference between regular home users and cops, training and storage...though some cops have proven that even cops can't be trusted to keep guns from their kids. but requiring decent storage methods should eliminate a LOT of child deaths from gunplay.
the only gun i owned was an air rifle, a tiny pellet gun, at 20 paces it wouldn't even break skin, but it was something to train on...i may never own another.

how about paintball guns, some people modify them, they fire a steady stream of balls, at above 700fps, above 700fps, they're legally defined as firearms and require a license, but nobody bothers to tell people to lock up their paintball guns, they'll easily put out eyes, from a long distance. there's a lot of paintball guns, but far as i know, nobody locks them up, or thinks a second about what would happen when the kids grab em...mostly cause most people that play paintball...childless computer geeks that only leave their caves to play paintball or get fast food. course...paintballs are gelatine with non toxic colourings, so they'll keep you alive in an emergency.
