Barbie Island Princess: A Dad Cheat Sheet

I get it guys, it is sometimes tough to fully catch yourself up to the stories, tv shows, and movies that your kids love. You don’t want to have to sit through 90 minute animated movies to be “in the know”. Kids conversations are like cocktail parties. You need just enough info on a subject to be able to start up a conversation.

This is the first installment of a series I like to call Noodad Notes. If you read these short plot descriptions you can score big with your little Robert Ebert. You will see I am also including proper names. Kids latch on to these and they will know the difference between a knowledgeable dad and a poseur. Finally, I am dictating all of these from memory. I have done the homework and have done the time watching these movies and chatting it up with my 5 year old daughter. I figure, if it is important enough for me to remember it, you should too.

Today, I am going to talk to you about the movie: Barbie as The Island Princess

The movie starts off with this blonde chick singing while walking on the beach. Her name is Ro (as in row row row your boat) and she was marooned on a people-less tropical island since she was a little girl. She doesn’t remember anything. How convenient. She was raised Tarzan-style by 3 animals: a red panda named Sagi, a peacock named Azul, and a baby elephant named Tika.

One day a dude comes ontot he island. He is a prince named Antonio. He decides to take Ro back with him to his kingdom. She says, “Only if I can bring my mini animal posse with me.” (Paraphrased). He agrees. On the boat ride home, she and him fall in love.

When they get back to the kingdom, the prince’s dad, King Peter tells him he must marry Princess Luciana: an arranged type of thing. Peter tells his dad he loves Ro instead and the king is like, “Oh no you di-int.” Luciana is pretty chill but her mom Queen Ariana is not. She got banished from the kingdom back in the day (to a pig farm no less) and she wants revenge by pimping out her daughter and then overthrowing the King after they are married.

Ro wants to go home but Antonio begs her to stay and so they move into the royal greenhouse where there are a ton of island roses there. There is some fancy ball and Ro is clueless because she grew up with animals so the royal monkey named Talullah helps her make a Peacock themed ball gown Cinderella-style.

Queen Ariana decides she doesn’t want to take any chances with Ro so she has some evil rats poison all the animal food with sleeping pills. The animals go to sleep and the King banished Ro because he says Ro’s animal buddies brought some sort of island sickness.

As they are on the ocean going back to the island, Azul gets sick cause it ate some of the sleeping powder. Ro realizes the island roses has some type of antidote so they go back towards the kingdom. On the way back they run into some scary waves and Ro gets a flashback and remembers her name is Rosella. She asks for her dolphin friends to help and they ride dolphins back to the kingdom.

They go back, have a throw down with Queen Ariana and get to the royal greenhouse and make an antidote. The kingdom animals woke up, the king apologizes, Ro blurts out that she remembers her name is Rosella and coincidentally, her long lost mom, Queen Marissa is there for the wedding.

Rosella and Antonio get hitched. The End
