Megabloks Block Buddies Race ‘n Go Rig

For as long as I can remember, I have been a Lego purist. As a kid, I did not want to have anything to do with Tyco blocks, toobers and zots, tinker toys (maybe a little) or lincoln logs. So you can imagine that when the outlaws picked up the Megablocks Car Carrier for my son, I was an instant skeptic.
So I took it out of the package and removed all the twisties (a process that took less than 15 minutes) and put it in the basement. I didn"t touch it again until my son was about 13 months old. This was a great time to break it back out because he was able to crawl and babble and play.
You get a giant car carrier which can easily carry the 6 mini cars. Perhaps the best part of it is that it has the aircraft carrier-like ability to deploy smaller vehicles from a larger vehicle. For me, that is nirvana. This is one of the reasons that I "put up with" my wife"s stroller mania. It means that we can deploy smaller vehicles from our larger vehicles. The cars are much larger than the standard matchbox car. The car bodies come off, which seems to be the only lego-like feature, and can be mixed and matched. The car carrier has 2 ramps and can be setup so that you can roll the cars directly onto either of the ramps. We did this from about 4 feet away and my son thought it was great. He was clapping his hands and hooting.
My son and I have tested the carrier and cars" ability to roll on several different surfaces. We found that they will roll fairly straight and true (and forever) on hardwood and tile. Short carpet also works, but slows them up a bit as you would expect. For a little crawler, we found this surface optimal because he had a blast chasing cars and bringing them back to me. I would also put three cars in a row and send them all rolling. Some of them veered a little, but I found that you could change the way they performed simply by switching the front part of the body to the back, or loosening that body part. You can also loosen them significantly so that when they hit something, they come apart.
The size of the car carrier is a little cumbersome for a toddler to carry, so I would recommend adult supervision for the 2 and under crowd. The handle on top could easily pinch their little fingers as well, but is convenient for car carrier carrying. The re-play value seems high. I am pretty impressed with this toy overall. It has kicked my Lego snottiness down a notch or 2. You can find it only for around $18.99.
