Noodad Product Test Drive: Luvs Bear Hug Stretch Diapers

txt_bearhugI am a Pampers snob. I admit it. When my first kid was born, my wife and I tried most every brand at least once. And we kept on going back to Pampers. We tried to save a few pennies and go Huggies or Luvs but the Pampers leaked less, felt softer, and had better cartoon characters. We then tried to save a few bucks and go warehouse brands like Kirkland, Target, or Berkely and Jensen. Even if we felt a little better in the wallet, we felt worse when we were cleaning up poodad streaks in the crib and in the car seat.

So that's why when Noodad.com was approached to review the new Bear Hug Stretch diapers from Luvs , I was skeptical. Luvs is saying all the right things: "New Bear Hug Stretch premium elastic sides stretch to fit. Luvs® helps stop leaks as well as the pricey brands. For great leak protection, all you need is Luvs"

Looks like Luvs is ready to bring it on. And after you read about their "Ultra Leakguard Guarantee " you'll realize "it has already been broughten ". So Luvs wants you to know that they work great on leaks and they will back it up with a money back guarantee if you aren't satisfied. How will it stand up to a real test? Our very own Foodad, Reviewdad, and yours truly tested out the Luvs Bear Hug Stretch diapers on our sons. We tested it on three boys all of which are packing some serious firehose power in those diapers. If these diapers truly back up what they say they do, I may be switching to a new brand of diapers.

Here's what Foodad had to say:
"The first thing we noticed was that Luvs fit out little man nicely.  The contour and lines are snug, but not tight. I also noticed that the diaper is not very bulky when it is dry.  The expansion when wet is excellent and the internal wetness seemed to be minimal  even when the diaper was "full".  I found the sticky parts to be a tad inferior to some of its competitors, but that said we have not experienced a situation where the diaper has come off when we do not want it to. Maybe some of the stickies on the competitors are overkill?  "

Here's what Reviewdad had to say:
"Pros: Price – Luvs continue to be a great value… Bear Hug tabs are
stretchy and secure.  Handled everything the kid had to offer…no spills
or leaks.
Cons: Still not as soft as all Pampers or as flexible as Pampers Cruisers
Conclusion: An improvement on Luvs and good features for the price.  But
still prefer Pampers for softness and perceived comfort on the kid."

Now for my review:
The Bear Hug Stretch feature rocks. The goal is always to keep those diapers snug to prevent leakage, and with the Bear Hug Stretch elastic, you can strap it on without as my wife says, "permanently restricting his intestinal lines." But we have experienced way more leaks with these diapers than we have ever experienced in the last 5 years. I'm just not convinced it holds as much pee as the Pampers do. That being said, the Blue's Clues print was a big hit with my son.

In conclusion, I feel that everyone should give Luvs a try. You should also give every other brand a try. The reality is every kid is different and unless you try them all, you won't know what works best for your kid. These Luvs clearly fit Reviewdad's boy better than mine as he had no leaks and we had Niagara Falls.

  • Just make it sure its environment-friendly. Babies frequently use diapers and this results to more waste.
  • Great post!

...new here, but, are you saying your 5 year old is still in diapers? or are you one of those perpetual breeders?

Have you tried cloth? Great fit and fun! There are soooo many cute cloth diapers out there too!

We\'ve tried most of the brands out there, and haven\'t seen a big difference (although, we tended to have a problem with the closures ripping off on the Luvs that we tried). But the Kirkland brand from Costco has been great. They fit my daughter well and seem to hold plenty. Plus, can\'t argue with the price. I agree that it\'s whatever works. :)

Little girl is working on potty training now, so I\'ll have to wait till the next one is born to try the new LUVs (March).

We tried all the major brands and some generic/store brands, and regular Huggies does the best job for us when it comes to containing bodily fluids. That was the top priority over price. I agree that not every kid is right for every diaper. You\'ve got to use what works best for YOU.

One thing I can say is that I definitely prefer the velcro/hook & loop closure over the adhesive.
  • I gotta say we are Pampers Crusier snobs! We tried luvs and huggies and even tried the \"baby dry\" version of pampers. Actually I do not care for the \"baby dry\" pampers at all. I know you get a few more in each pack but like Noodad says... it ain\'t worth it when you have to clean up some leakage! I will give these new leakproof Luvs a shot on our little girl!
