Vernors Ginger Ale: The Best Soft Drink on the Planet

656px-vernors_gingersoda.jpgI have been holding a mini competition of global proportions for the last 20 years of my life. It is the title of the Best Soft Drink on the Planet. It started when I was 12 and I said to my buddy, Eric, “Nothing beats Dr. Pepper”. To which he replied, “I think Mr. Pibb is better.” After tasting it, I agreed. So began the constant battle of my tastebuds.

But when I visited my wife’s hometown of St. Louis for the first time, she exposed me to something that changed my life forever: Vernors Barrel Aged Ginger Ale.

See, I was born on the West Coast and I grew up on the East Coast. This liquid gold is only available in between.

Vernors is the oldest soft drink in America (invented in 1866) and it still rocks out after all these years. Anyone who has tried it knows what the best part of the Vernor’s experience is: opening the can and taking the first gulp. The fizz is so overpowering up your nose you gag. And that is the best feeling in the world.

You can get it in 2 litres as well but when given the choice, you have to go “can“. Here are my top 3 soft drinks of all time (reevaluated on a daily basis of course)

#1. Vernors
#2. Virgil’s Root Beer
#3. Coke with Banana and Vanilla syrup from Sonic

What do you guys think? Am I right, or do you have something that is better?

VERNORS - The one and only true Ginger Ale

  • I just spotted Vernor's on the top shelf of the soda aisle at Harris Teeter. Near the seltzers and other small-quantity products.
  • As is well-known the Gatorade brands have a lock on all major high-school and collegiate sporting events and Pepsi stands tall as the go-to soft-drink in corporate cafeterias nationwide. So where could Ginger Ale go find a niche?

  • Cheerwine is incredible. The worst thing about leaving NC was leaving Cheerwine behind. Sweet tea was bad too.
  • CHEERWINE!!! If any of you are from the south you know what I am talking about! When you are in NC, SC or GA be sure to try out a Cheerwine if you like cherry 7-up, Dr. Pepper, Mr. Pibb or cherry flavored drinks!

    Virgil's was robbed!!! This is a libation mockery!!! I demand a re-count....er, uh...re-imbibe!!!

I agree that Jarritos belongs in the Top 3 as well. Washed down a Boca Grande burrito supreme with a mandarin just last night.

Personally, ginger ale/beer is not my thing...but I totally agree with Squirt. I had an uncle who used to bring Squirt with him from Michigan when he visited. It was the best present he could bring! I have to add Jarritos to the discussion because when you're eating Mexican or Tex/Mex, there's nothing better. I know FooDad will agree. But you've got to choose wisely - Mandarin, Lime and Guava rule. Watermelon is a HUGE disappointment.

The best Birch Beer on the planet is Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer.

Drink one of those with a bag of Barbecue Herr's potato chips, a WaWa meatball sub, and a Tastykake and you have a slice of Pennsylvania heaven

For the deprived, you can order Vernor's at www.vernors.com.

    Amen brother Noodad!!!

    Vernor's is #1.
    Squirt is my #2.
I like Birch Beer a lot too, but can't think of a good specific brand.

The best part about Vernor's as Noodad pointed out is that fizz makes you sneeze or almost choke a little. The taste is powerful, but in a fun way, not like those awful persimmons I see people eating.
