If you are the parent of a teenager, you probably spend countless hours a week worrying about your kid driving or getting into a car of one of their friends.

There is a company called Teen Spy that allows you to actually spy on your kids when they are out on the roads. No, this isn’t a network of security cameras spread out across your town. It is spying in the form of a bumper sticker.

You know when you pull up behind a truck at a stop light and the truck has a “How’s My Driving?” sticker with a phone number to report poor or dangerous driving to the company that employs him or her? Well, this works the same way. You pay a registration fee, a yearly fee, and you get a bumper sticker with reference number to slap onto your kid’s car.

Now total strangers on the road act as your security camera and your kid drives around town looking like a tool. Which brings us to this week’s Master Debater question:

Are these Teen Spy stickers good parenting or lazy parenting? Shouldn’t you put some trust in your kids before you hand them the car keys?

How do you weigh in?

  • They are absolutely Lazy Parenting.
  • teen spy has an advantage and disadvantage. the advantage is you can monitor the way your teen drives. but the disadvantage is people will think that parents are lazy on guiding and teaching their kids on proper way of driving.
  • I wouldnt say it lazy parenting & it's about being vigilant parents.
  • very nice I don't know what else to say
  • I wouldn't call it 'lazy parenting' but you should trust your kid before giving them keys. Then comes the issue of motive-you're not spying to find fault, you simply want to make sure your kid is safe.In that case i guess it's ok.
  • I would say it's good parenting! BTW I would never hand them my car keys until they are adults!

I am not quite certain what this statement is all about. I am being quoted here and I do not know in what context. Please explain. I would appreciate it.
  • Hmm this is quite hard. It depends really. It's not about not trusting them. It's about knowing the capabilities of your child, whether or not they can do such a thing. But then again, that's not a reliable thing to depend on. I'm really torn.
  • The ref# is bigger than the space you see.

The only thing wrong with that sticker is that it's rather difficult to read, especially Ref#, which is the most important part. I'd probably put a decal on the other side of the bumper with the vehicle # like most trucking companies do.
