Should girls be allowed to play in boys Little League Baseball leagues?
Posted on 11 16, 2006 under Master Debaters by Noodad |
Parents take youth sports seriously. Sometimes more seriously than their kids do. Combine the rabid nature of getting your kid to excel in sports with the changing landscape in equal rights and you have a potential powder keg brewing on the little league field.
On one hand you have parents who want their kid to play and enjoy whatever sport they want to. Sometimes that means daughters playing on boys little league teams. But there is a double standard when you don't allow boys to play on girls softball teams.
Which brings us to this week's question…
Question : Should girls be allowed to play in boys Little League Baseball leagues?
There are some topics that seem to fall into the consensus category:
drunk driving is bad, guns kill people, Transformers are better than
GoBots. But that only covers less than 1% of the decisions you and your
spouse make towards the upbringing of your kids. The majority of issues
tend to fall more in the gray area.
Here at Noodad.com, we take pride in delivering important advice for
dads. But we realize that some of our advice is subjective. The
collected readership surely have things to add and unique perspectives
to contribute. That is why we are pleased to continue our
weekly feature called the Master Debaters Question of the Week.
We encourage everyone (men and
women) to weigh in—even if it is a simple one word answer. We hope a
lively discussion can develop.

I know that in our area (Boston) there have been cases of boys playing girl sports. They didn\'t have boys volley ball in this area when I was in high school, and I remember my school\'s volley ball team facing a squad with twin brothers in the state tournament. I also remember reading about a boy who played field hockey--wore the skirt and everything.

IMHO Western society has built up a lot of artificial sexual divisions between kids that usualy cause more harm than good. When I was a kid it made no difference to me whether I was playing against girls or boys, it\'s a decision made by adults \'for the good\'.

I played little league baseball, and I pitched for my team.
I don\'t mean to brag, but I threw just as hard and acurate as any guy we played against.
And to those who want us to only play sofbtall...
Baseball and Softball are two totally different games.
And guys play softball, so why can\'t women play baseball?

Girls and their families can sign up at Little League; Cal Ripken or Babe Ruth; Protect our Nations’ Youth (PONY); if you are already skilled enough - from playing Baseball or Softball - you have the opportunity to try out for American Legion Baseball.
If you or the girl in your life are fortunate enough and interested in playing in All-Girls Baseball there are a few opportunities to consider in the USA, Canada and Australia.
If you have a local Recreation & Park league - or one of the other community organizations such as Boys & Girls Club or Police Activities League (PAL); YMCA or JCC: you have every right and opportunity to sign up for BASEBALL:
NO PERSON OR ORGANIZATION CAN PREVENT YOU FROM SIGNING UP FOR AND PLAYING HARDBALL BASEBALL IN ANY COMMUNITY LEAGUE THAT EITHER RECEIVES PUBLIC FUNDING OR PLAYS ON PUBLIC PROPERTY.- EVEN IF THEY HAVE A SOFTBALL PROGRAM JUST FOR GIRLS!
Also, in Middle and High School, PUBLIC OR PRIVATE, girls always have the option of trying out - but making the team is at the discretion of the coach whether a boy or girl tries out. Even though some states have rules that are there to intended on preventing girls from trying out - because they THINK having a Softball team is the same thing - but it isn’t: there are ways to challenge it at the school site level: you and your parents should talk with your school Principal and Athletic Director for their support.

Help spread the word - the time is now for girls who want to / play Baseball!
