Tax Deduction or Local Fame: What’s More Important?

Posted on 04 05, 2007 under Master Debaters by Noodad |

pcu2813Typically we take a more serious turn when it comes to our Master Debaters feature every friday. But for today's entry I thought we would revisit a topic only the real diehard Noodad fans will be familiar with. This is a topic that Foodad and I ran as a poll on Noodad.com back in the day (Read March 2006).

In the old days, when a pregnant woman was past her due date , the only option was to wait it out until the baby decided to come out. But with modern medicine, there is a greater flexibility with inducing labor and a more calculated science in when the baby comes into this world.

Typically, the "time of birth" is as arbitrarily insignificant as a "time of death". You are so damn exhausted by the labor that you just care about the baby's health. But there is one time of year where a difference in seconds can make a huge difference. Which brings me to this week's question - a question of money versus fame:

Would you rather have your baby born at 11:59 PM, New Year's Eve and get the tax deduction or 12:01 AM, New Year's Day and get on the evening news?

It's a question that says a lot about what you are about deep down in the core. As a SSP (shameless self-promoter), I would go with the evening news and then, amidst my interview with some special interest reporter, plug Noodad.com of course. I could hear it now: "Coming up, a well-known daddy blogger makes some headlines of his own!"

Now you know what I would do. What do you guys think? What's your motivation?

If it were as simple as you suggest, I\'d take the tax break most years. First of the century or decade? Then we\'ll talk.

You\'ve also got to consider that the 30 seconds of local news fame will come on New Year\'s Day, a day when most people are hungover, watching football, or both. No one much cares about local news that day and on many channels it will come on at weird times around football.

Additionally, when deciding whether you\'d want a 12/31 or 1/1 baby think about the state/school district you\'re in. My home town had a 12/31 birthdate cutoff for kindergarten enrollment. Thus, the oldest kids in a grade were the January babies and the youngest were the Decembers. Do you want your kid to be the big kid of the little kid? I was a little kid and got by just fine... Of course, from what I understand most schools operate on an August or September cutoff.
