What’s better for bathroom training: potty or toilet?

outhouse-735317It’s one of the sweetest times for parents: the day when you say goodbye to diapers.  No more blowouts or super soakers.  No more wallet-busting mega packs on your Target sales slips.  You do have to pay a price to reach this milestone, though—potty training.

Teaching your kid to go to the bathroom somewhere other than his pants is a challenge, and at times it can be frustrating.  Just when you think you’re all set, your kid straddle-walks up to you with a deposit in his Underoos.  Parents who have been through the ordeal can attest that there are basically two options.  You can teach your kid to go in a plastic potty, or go straight to the porcelain bowl.


Some kids refuse to use a regular toilet once they learn on a potty.  When parents try to get their kid to use a toilet without the help of the transitional step of a potty chair, some find that their kid is intimidated by the big bowl and won’t get on it.   There are pros and cons to both techniques, and we want to hear them from you:

    We tried both with my daughter and even though the plastic potty made a regal trumpet sound when something fell in (a royal flush?) it was more a distraction than a help.

    Eventually, we just went with the toilet. It made it easier to explain, \"Honey, daddy takes a dump in here, you should too.\"

    The only thing to remember is you should put one of those kids seats on it first. The toilet bowl can be a very dangerous place, especially for little butts. One minute they can be sitting there, and the next thing you know, they are snorkeling in their own piss.

    I agree! Why go through all the extra steps of cleaning and disinfecting a little plastic pot of poop and pee when you could have just flushed it in the first place?

    There\'s nothing cooler to little kids than being able to use the \"Big Girl\" or \"Big Boy\" potty-add the toilet seat and step of their choice, some Baby/Kandoo wipes, and call it a day!
