Appropriate Move or Overreaction?

PBS Kids Sprout announced yesterday that they fired Melanie Martinez, the sort of hot host of "The Good Night Show." This was done in response to the news of a series of videos she did prior to her Sprout gig called "Technical Virgin". These videos apparently spoof PSAs about how young women can keep their virginity. Do you think this is an overreaction or appropriate action for PBS?

Will kids who watch "The Good Night Show" even see these videos? And if they do will they even know what they are about? And does that matter?

This is getting out of control... they want to shut down everything. So does Melanie Martinez have to live a preschool life 24 hrs a day? What if someone found out she had sex with her BF in a parked car when she was in high scool, is she gonna be busted for that also? THIS IS BS! :upset

Agreed. She\'s an actress...who ACTS. She\'s obviously a good host for the show, and the target audience obviously likes her... And she wasnt doing porn. Unlikely that the kids watching the show will ever see these two videos. Total overreaction on PBSs part. They should be concerned about the kids who have come to know and love her and expect to see her on TV. The show\'s supposed to be soothing. What\'s more disconcerting than replacing the host suddenly?! :upset

IFilm has both of the vids. Hilarious stuff, and probably nothing any kid watching Sprout should ever come across anyway. Boo PBS! I suppose they\'ll just \"send her off to college\" like they did with the first Blues Clues guy.

I think had she disclosed of these videos initially, she would have stood a better chance of them being overlooked as no big deal, but since she chose to wait and disclose of her participation in such videos until months....a year? into her contract, seems like she felt like she needed to hide them for some reason, and therefore suspicious. I\'m sure there was also a serious lack of trust on the employer end of \"what else isn\'t she telling us?\".

This, in contrast to Disney's reaction to Miley Cyrus' scandal last year certainly does seem like an incredibly overblown reaction. These were obviously spoofs and not aimed at the mass viewing public.

In Miley's case, not only did Disney ignore her practically-nude Annie Leibovitz photos on the cover and within vanity Fair - a magazine clearly not aimed at teens - but they in fact ramped up on Hanna Montana promotions at Christmastime.

And here's my thing: Disney may not specifically say, "We're a wholesome and positive influence for your kids," but they absolutely do bank on that implied rationale. They ply that perceived image of themselves holding to a higher grade of family-friendly morals and reap millions of dollars in doing so. Yet, they do nothing to set an example when a teenage girl poses for provocative photos on an adult publication. And somehow, the public (for the most part) doesn't take them to task for their failure to adhere to a better moral standard.

We love the Little Einsteins show and I support that brand because I do think it's a quality show that encourages learning and interaction. But at the same time, I grudgingly do so, knowing that I'm feeding dollars into the Disney machine, which promotes - and profits insanely off of - the trampy likes of of Lindsey Lohan & Miley Cyrus.
